There are 6 retrograde planets in the sky right now: What does that tell us?

Updated: Sep 18, 2023

There are a total of six retrograde planets in the sky, so give it a minute before you sign an important contract, or make any final decisions.

When planets station retrograde, they slow down which essentially encourages us to do the same as a collective. There’s no such thing as right or wrong, as we all go through life at our own individual pace, but sometimes 'slowing down' can ultimately help speed things up in the long run — this is the silver lining. A retrograde cycle is similar to a holiday, with the exception that it isn’t necessarily celebrated. Just the mere thought of the word retrograde is more than often intimidating — especially when considering the notorious effects of Mercury retrograde (i.e. technology glitches, car troubles, and general miscommunications — but it can be quite productive when the energy is harnessed correctly.

Our state of mind plays a role in everything we do, so try to discern between your thoughts and the reality of the situation, especially those of you who naturally stress at the thought of a planet being retrograde. For logistical reference on this astrological phenomenon, retrogrades take place when a planet reverses directly over the degrees it recently transited over, which is kind of similar to making a U-turn when you’re driving because you forgot something. This is precisely why we’re reminded to stop, reflect, review, and re-evaluate what’s right in front of us. The retrograde theme, however, depends on the planet’s celestial energy and role in astrology. In any event, the retrograde planet isn’t working at its fullest potential, so it’s best to hold off on important commitments.

Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Pluto and Neptune are currently retrograde, and here’s what they all mean:

  1. Mercury Retrograde in Virgo: August 23 - September 15, 2023 - Since mid-August, Mercury (planet of communication, transportation, and immediate surroundings) retrograde in Virgo has put a spotlight on everything from our day-to-day affairs to our health routines. What can you improve? What needs to be re-worked in this area of your life?

  2. Jupiter Retrograde in Taurus: September 4 - December 30, 2023 - Jupiter is the planet of abundance, blessings, expansion and faith. Also known as the “Greater Benefic” and the largest planet in the solar system, Jupiter magnifies whatever it comes in contact with. This retrograde cycle is asking us to re-evaluate our hopes, ideals, and longterm goals. Are they worthy of your time, energy and investments?

  3. Saturn Retrograde in Pisces: June 17 - November 4, 2023 - Also known as Father Time, Saturn is the planet of structure, limitations, restrictions and our sense of authority. Saturn retrograde in Pisces is encouraging us to take a closer look at the foundation of our partnerships, both personally and professionally. Are there boundaries that need to be set? Are you being realistic about these commitments?

  4. Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn: May 1 - October 10, 2023 - Pluto is the planet of death, rebirth, transformation, and everything that’s hidden beneath the surface. Powerhouse Pluto officially entered Aquarius back in March, but it re-entered Capricorn in June for a final transit through the last degrees of this cardinal earth sign. Capricorn represents the old while Aquarius represents the future, and this retrograde wants you to reflect on what you’re ready to purge, and transform.

  5. Uranus Retrograde in Taurus: August 28 -January 17, 2024 - Although change-maker Uranus is the planet of rebellion, innovation, and unexpected breakthroughs, its retrograde journey takes us inward while challenging us to reflect on our relationship with change. Uranus retrograde is teaching us how to adapt to unexpected changes, and life’s curveballs. Everyone has their own Uranian qualities, so consider this an opportunity to tap into your inner genius.

  6. Neptune Retrograde in Pisces: June 30 - December 6, 2023 - In addition to being Pisces’ modern ruler, Neptune is the planet of deception, dreams, fantasy, illusions, subconscious realms, and universal love. Neptune is right at home while transiting this mutable water sign, but its retrograde journey sheds a light on the areas where we may have been deceiving ourselves. Intuition is also incredibly heightened at this time.
